On this week’s Behind The Message, Pastor Daniel & Jennifer continue the discussion from this past weekend’s message on Acts focusing in particular on Jesus’ final command to His disciples to GO and be witnesses sharing about His life, death, and resurrection. They discuss the Holy Spirit and the power to witness that is given to the believer through Him. Also, missionaries Tommy & Marcia Hopson are special guests and join the conversation by sharing about God’s direction to them to go and live in another country as witnesses for Jesus.

Jennifer’s “what got you” from the recording was when Pastor Paul asked, “where (physically) has God placed you that you do not need to leave?” She shared that her answer to this question is to have the perspective that her current Covid circumstances are a gift to leverage rather than an inconvenience to escape. Read Romans 5:1-5.

• What do these verses say will be produced within us if we will hold this perspective of seeing our sufferings as a gift and something in which to rejoice?
• How are we enabled to endure and have these fruits produced in us?

Talk about Pastor Paul’s Big Idea from the sermon “We Go As Witnesses.” Discuss the implications of being a witness for Christ who is to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

• What is the whole truth of the Gospel?
• Which part of the Gospel is hardest for you to share? Why?

 

Read Acts 1:14. How are the disciples described? What are they doing? Discuss the correlation between being devoted to prayer and being of one accord.

 

In the recording, Tommy and Marcia Hopson talked about how God refined and defined His direction for them to go to Uganda. They shared that the course of time was over a six year span. Talk about the ways God directed and confirmed His direction to them.

 

Just like Tommy & Marcia, we as believers are all called to GO as witnesses because Jesus is Alive. Going as witnesses is a direct command from Jesus, not merely a suggestion or a good thing to do. Consider your current witness for Jesus and determine what is your next step. Share that next step with your Discussion Group. Maybe your next step is to…

• Walk across the street and share the Gospel with your neighbor
• Say yes to a short term trip
• Commit to memory the whole truth of the Gospel so you are equipped to share when the opportunity arises
• Join in a Life Group where brothers and sisters will call you to be accountable to share the Gospel
• Devote yourself to praying for the lost

Read Luke 24:44-47. Why did the disciples not understand and hold onto these teachings? 

-Consider Joseph of Arimathea (Luke 23:50-54). During the recording, Pastor Mike, Pastor Daniel, and Jennifer all discussed what it cost Joseph of Arimathea to publicly make a stand for Jesus by taking His body and giving Him his own tomb for His burial. Read Matthew 16:24-25. According to his actions, was Joseph of Arimathea a disciple of Jesus? Could a case be made for the authenticity of your discipleship based on the criteria found in these verses in Matthew 16?

-In Jennifer’s “What Got You” response, she talked about Jesus’ appearances to

In Luke 22, Jesus institutes the Lord’s Supper to be celebrated in the place of The Passover. Understanding the context of The Passover gives insight into Jesus’ direction to his disciples. Read Exodus 12 and answer the following questions.

 

What is significant about the timing of the celebration of  The Passover? When are the people supposed to celebrate it? (Exodus 12:2).

 

Describe the sacrifice that is to be offered. (Exodus 12:3-6) Read Exodus 12:7-11. What are God’s instructions for:

The blood of the animal

The flesh of the animal

The manner in which the people are to participate in the sacrifice

 

Why does God give these instructions for The Passover to His people? (Exodus 12:12-13) 

 

That first Passover was not to be observed only that night while the Israelites were in Egypt. God gave them clear instructions that they were to celebrate it yearly. For what reason? (Exodus 12:24-27) 

 

Now that you have more of an understanding about the context of The Passover, make some connections to Jesus’ institution of the Lord’s Supper as the replacement for The Passover.

Who is the sacrifice that is to be remembered at the Lord’s Supper? (Luke 22:19)

Recall the lamb offered at The Passover, what was distinctive about the lamb? 

Did Jesus meet the standard of being without blemish? (1 Peter 2:22; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 4:15)

 

Consider Big Idea #3 from the sermon. Discuss the idea of the Lord’s Supper being instituted in order to proclaim the Gospel and anticipate the coming Marriage Supper of the Lamb. How do these aspects of the Lord’s Supper make it different from the celebration of The Passover? 

 

The BTM mailbox was full this week! Take some time to discuss the panelist’s responses to question #3 which centered on a believer’s response to the circumstances surrounding Covid-19. Which of the suggestions will you put into practice in the coming days?

I am feeling pretty powerless over the circumstances and decisions that are affecting my family and me during this season of CoVid-19. In fact, many of the decisions regarding school, church, work, etc. I just plain do not agree with and am having a difficult time reconciling myself with the decisions that are being made. Can you please give me some suggestions/guidelines that will help me process these thoughts and emotions in a way that honors God and honors those in leadership over me?

Behind The Message EP 5 - John 6 - Jesus Is The Bread Of Life

Aug. 31, 2020 

During this week’s Behind The Message, Pastor Daniel & Jennifer along with Wes Tucker unpack this past weekend’s message discussing further Jesus’ statement: “I Am The Bread Of Life.” They highlight the importance of acknowledging that it is the Spirit Who gives life and that there is nothing that our fleshly selves can contribute to an unbeliever’s conversion. Our sole work is to make much of Jesus...being filled by the Spirit, sharing the Gospel by faith, and trusting God to bring to Him those who He calls. Holding to this truth will encourage us to proclaim the Gospel more boldly, pray more desperately, and love more truly.

Big Truth:
Jesus is the Bread of Life

Big Ideas:
-Jesus is the bread that satisfies.
-Jesus is the bread that saves.
-Jesus is the bread that sustains.

Jesus is the Bread of Life. Everything else, no matter how good it is, in the end, cannot satisfy, save, or sustain us. Israel ate manna and died. Jesus alone is the bread of life.

-Read John 6:48-50. In this passage, Jesus is making reference to Exodus 16 where God provided manna for the Israelites in the wilderness after He set them free from Egyptian slavery. Read Exodus 16 in order to gain insight into what Jesus is referring to in John 6.

 -Who provided for the need?
 -What were the directions given to the Israelites?
 -Why were these directions significant?
